Random order responses to the "Circle" question per Jean Clarke's book
Circle # Topic ( Archived )   Circle    Question
93 NATURE of the TODDLER When should I start reading to my baby, and what should I read? She doesn't pay attention to anything for very long.
  • Start today.
  • Look at a simple picture book together each day.
  • Pick books that have one large picture per page, pictures that are good for naming and pointing to objects.
  • Include the baby when you're reading to your older child.
  • Read a few sentences out loud from whatever you are reading: recipes, newspapers, or magazine articles.
  • You can expect a very short attention span at this age. She may stay interested for two minutes or less.
  • Provide cloth books that your child can chew on and crumple.
  • Make story time a special time for physical closeness with your baby, cuddling her when she allows it.
  • Repeat favorite nursery rhymes throughout the day while bathing, diapering, or riding in the car. Occasionally show her nursery-rhyme books.
  • Use very stiff board books. The baby may rather open and close the book than be read to.
  • Give her old magazines to look at and tear up.
