NATURE of the TODDLER |
When should I start reading to my baby, and what should I read? She doesn't pay attention to anything for very long. |
- Start today.
- Look at a simple picture book together each day.
- Pick books that have one large picture per page, pictures that are good for naming and pointing to objects.
- Include the baby when you're reading to your older child.
- Read a few sentences out loud from whatever you are reading: recipes, newspapers, or magazine articles.
- You can expect a very short attention span at this age. She may stay interested for two minutes or less.
- Provide cloth books that your child can chew on and crumple.
- Make story time a special time for physical closeness with your baby, cuddling her when she allows it.
- Repeat favorite nursery rhymes throughout the day while bathing, diapering, or riding in the car. Occasionally show her nursery-rhyme books.
- Use very stiff board books. The baby may rather open and close the book than be read to.
- Give her old magazines to look at and tear up.
